This extraordinary Mezzotint Etching is a complete example of fine craftsmanship and precision of the mediums. The movement evokes the great power of nature, encompassing the cloud and sea. If we may judge of the approaching weather by the huge inky cloud that is quickly shutting up the sky, the darkness eludes the remaining light, determining the fate of those who dare to challenge the violently folding waters. The fisherman, franticly departing from the Calais Pier, are preparing to put out to sea while their wives are administering to their wants. The composition of this piece, colliding with the arrangement of gray tones, leaves the viewer in awe and wonder. This was Sir Seymour Haden’s largest undertaking. To witness this remarkable piece is a grand experience.
